Phonics
At Edward Wilson Primary School, we teach Phonics following the DfE Letters and Sounds scheme. Letters and Sounds is a successful, systematic way of teaching children to read by linking sounds to the letters which represent them. Our interactive daily Phonics lessons are taught by teachers whom have received additional training via our partnership with the Wandle English Hub.
There are six phases of Letters and Sounds:

Each lesson consists of 4 parts:
- Revisit and Review
- Teach
- Practise
- Apply
To support their learning of new sounds, the children are taught actions and mnemonics. Tricky words are also taught as part of the lesson.
