Provision for Pupils with a Vision Impairment

The Vision Impairment Resource Base at Edward Wilson Primary School is part of the Bi-borough Inclusion Service and led by Janee Hall, QTVI (Qualified Teacher of children and young people with Vision Impairment)

Established in September 2005, the base is a recognised centre of excellence for the education and inclusion of children with vision impairment.  It is one of the few specialist mainstream primary provisions of its kind in London, combining high-quality specialist teaching by an experienced QTVI with full inclusion in a mainstream school.  Our vision is for every child to thrive both academically and socially, developing their confidence and resilience for when they transition to secondary school and beyond.

The QTVI works alongside the school’s main class teachers and learning support staff to plan and adapt teaching and learning strategies, ensuring modified learning resources are tailored for the individual child. In addition, the QTVI regularly delivers one to one teaching for braille and accessible IT skills.

With a holistic approach to supporting our students our work is underpinned by the new Curriculum Framework for Children and Young People with Vision Impairment (CFVI) Curriculum Framework for Children and Young People with Vision Impairment | RNIB | RNIB .

Pupils with a vision impairment have full access to the curriculum, educational visits and afterschool clubs. We have high expectations for all our pupils and believe each young person has the potential to achieve, provided that they are given access to the correct resources, stimulus and support.

At any one time we can have up to seven pupils with a vision impairment who are supported by the Resource Base. This brings about peer support and empathy – our young people often begin sharing their experiences and soon find they are role models for new or younger pupils in school, fostering a unique community which develops pupils’ confidence as they become increasingly independent learners.

The QTVI recognises the additional needs and concerns of vision impaired pupils and their families at different stages  throughout their time with us.  We regularly work alongside other supporting professionals and will signpost to external organisations when needed. We have long established links with RNIB, Guide Dogs and the Bi-borough SEN outreach team.

As a dedicated Resource Base for pupils with vision impairment we offer the following:

  • Experienced and supportive QTVI, teaching staff and Learning Support Assistants
  • Modified teaching and learning resources such as Large Print texts, Braille books, audio files, tactile graphs, maps and play equipment.
