Alternative Resource Provision for Pupils with a Visual Impairment

Welcome to Our Alternative Resource Provision for Pupils with a Visual Impairment (VI)

At Edward Wilson Primary School, we are proud to host a specialist Alternative Resource Provision (ARP) for pupils with a visual impairment (VI), established in September 2005. Our goal is to provide full inclusion for visually impaired children within a mainstream primary school setting. Over the years, we have supported numerous pupils in developing the educational and life skills needed for a smooth transition to Key Stage 3 and beyond.

In addition to supporting pupils at Edward Wilson, we offer outreach services to children and young adults with visual impairments across Westminster, reinforcing our commitment to inclusion and accessibility.

Our Team and Approach
Our ARP is led by a Qualified Teacher of Visually Impaired (QTVI) children, who specialises in creating and delivering tailored support for pupils with sight loss. The QTVI works collaboratively with mainstream teachers to adapt class teaching and learning, ensuring that every pupil can access the curriculum effectively.

Key aspects of our provision include:

  • Modified Learning Resources: Customized materials such as Braille books, tactile resources, audio files, and adapted play equipment.
  • One-to-One Teaching: Focused sessions on Braille (including pre-Braille skills and Unified English Braille), accessible IT skills, and tactile awareness.
  • Inclusive Curriculum Access: Support to participate fully in lessons, educational visits, and after-school clubs.

Support Beyond the Classroom
We recognise that pupils with a visual impairment and their families may face unique challenges throughout their educational journey. Our QTVI, along with other professionals, provides emotional and practical support during key moments such as transitions or changes in a pupil’s vision.

We have strong partnerships with trusted organisations like the RNIB, Guide Dogs, and Westminster's Sensory Support Outreach Team. Additionally, we liaise closely with parents and caregivers to ensure that self-help strategies are consistently applied at home and school.

What We Offer
As a dedicated Alternative Resource Provision for pupils with a visual impairment, we are committed to providing:

  • Expert Staff: An experienced QTVI and a visually impaired member of staff serving as a role model for pupils.
  • Assistive Technology: Tools such as BrailleNote, Perkins Brailler, and laptops with talking software and magnification.
  • Mobility and Habilitation Support: One-to-one sessions led by a habilitation specialist aligned with pupils’ EHC plans.
  • Enrichment Activities: Bespoke trips (e.g., audio-described theatre performances, horse riding, rock climbing) and project-based workshops with visiting artists and musicians.
  • Emotional Support: For both pupils and families, especially during times of transition or after new diagnoses.

A Community of Inclusion and Achievement
At Edward Wilson Primary, we have high expectations for all our pupils and firmly believe that every child has the ability to succeed. Our ARP for visually impaired pupils ensures they receive the specialised support they need to thrive while enjoying the benefits of an inclusive education.
